Porto president says Cristiano Ronaldo too expensive
Pinto da Costa, president of Porto, claims that Cristiano Ronaldo is too expensive for any Portuguese club to purchase.
Ronaldo’s contract with Manchester United was terminated last month as a result of his controversial Piers Morgan interview, in which he criticised the Red Devils’ hierarchy, including manager Erik ten Hag.
The Portuguese captain made more news at the World Cup when he was benched for both his nation’s quarterfinal loss to Morocco and their 6-1 victory over Switzerland in the round of 16.
The Saudi Pro League team Al Nassr and Sporting CP, where the 37-year-old started his career, have both been linked with a move for the player who trains at Real Madrid.
Da Costa, however, believes that given the five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s wage demands, a return to Portugal is unlikely.
“It’s up to him and the clubs interested, but in Portugal, nobody has the capacity to give him what he earns and still wants to earn,” he said. “And he deserves that.”
The Porto manager also affirmed that the club welcomes the seasoned defender Pepe to remain there as long as he is healthy enough to play.
In February, the former Real Madrid defender will turn 40, but he doesn’t appear to be slowing down.
This year, he has made seven appearances for Porto and started four of Portugal’s five games in Qatar 2022.
When asked if Pepe’s contract could be renewed, Da Costa responded: “As long as he can play and I think he will play for another five or six years.”
